what is being called music. Leftetz makes no distinction between different kinds of music, which leads him in the wrong direction.
There is music and music. For classical music listeners, it is quite normal not to run around while listening (that is what they do in concert halls), so multichannel is OK for them. For this audience, the solution to good sound has already been found - SACD. Despite all the talk about SACD demise, this format got a foothold in classical music with a steady stream of new releases. It is not a multibillion dollar business, but it is here to stay with a stable (and maybe expanding) customer base.
Pop music is different. Pop does not need hi def because it does not use natural sound: pop is created using low def media and manipulation. Due to this fact, all attempts to push hi def down the throat of pop music listeners are futile. What pop needs is to adjust music production to the MP3-ipod format, which is being achieved quite successfuly.
