Tone controls aren't necessary if the equipment doesn't exaggerate any particular frequency range and distortion levels are low, the recordings are reasonable, and the room is not excessively reflective or damped. You don't need to acoustically treat a reasonable room to get reasonable results. You certainly can treat it in order to get better results and I have treated mine, but you shouldn't need to treat it to remove harshness unless there's something overly reflective about the room at mid to high frequencies. If the equipment is harsh, treating the room may reduce the harshness but possibly at the cost of losing something else in the process. Room treatment should not be used as a cure for equipment problems. It should be used to cure room problems if they exist, and to improve the sound of a reasonable room if you wish to do so and have the freedom to do so because WAF is certainly a factor when it comes to room treatment.
Equipment problems need to be fixed by fixing, or changing, the equipment.
