For the most part, if response shows large peaks in response, it is not due to the receiver or amplifier. It's the speakers and very possibly the program material
If someone thinks a speaker is an ear-bleeder, I suppose it is for that person. However, it may not be so for you or for most people. There has been considerable research as to what sonic characteristics most people like in loudspeakers. Even response over a wide dispersion is one of the most important.
John Atkinson has a good series of articles on Measuring Loudspeakers which you can find on the Stereophile site.
There are a number of White Papers on the Harman International site which are quite authoritative, most written by Dr. Floyd Toole.

Soundstage has many of the speakers they review measured at the National Research Council. They have a page called "How We Test Loudspeakers . . ." It is probably the simplest and easiest read.
