Theta Intrepid amplifier ($2,000 used), Theta Casablanca I preamp/processor ($1400-$1800 used depending on options), Vandersteen 2CE Signatures for main speakers ($800-$1000 used), Vandersteen VSM-1 or 1C as surround ($600 used), and Blu-ray player of your choosing. Skip the center channel speaker if critical listeners are not going to be well off axis (pre/pro in Phantom center mode) and use the fifth channel of amplification to power a passive subwoofer. Parts Express has a number of kit subwoofers for under $500 that perform very well or stretch the budget for a Vandersteen sub ($800-$1000 used). This system will be far more musical and engaging than any receiver-based home theater and will provide more than just a taste of the high end.

Strongly consider acoustic room treatments because these often provide the most improvement in sound for the least money. Try Auralex diffusers and absorbers as these offer great value. Purchase a decent sound level meter (Parts Express) and a few test discs to properly set it all up. Good luck!
