My wife has questioned my "need" for more music at various times in our marriage but she never criticized it. She loves movies and books and buys DVDs and books all the time. She buys a book and finishes it in a day or so (thankfully she is hooked on the local library so we are saving a good bit of money there) but her DVD collection is getting large. I don't ask her why she buys what she buys, and she respects that. I do wonder how she could watch some of the stuff she watches...but then she doesn't exactly love all my music ;)

The key for us is that I never spend money we don't have or shouldn't really be spending. With my education, our kids and household bills, buying music has taken a major step back in my spending priorities, but when I can, I like to pick up albums on my want to buy list. I'll aim for vinyl first and these get pricey fast compared with picking up a CD at the local megabox store. I work hard for my money, "our" money and she acknowledges that. I don't get flack just bewildered looks at the stuff I buy.

However, my wife, for most of her life has had a pretty narrow view of music or perhaps better put, a rather narrow range of listening tastes mainly due to exposure. Recently I've really opened her up to jazz and my cd collection has a LOT of jazz. So, when marrying me, I brought to the table 1000 or so CDs of which she may have appreciated 20. Now over the last few months she has come to adore a good 200 at least. "Oh you have this too? This is great!"

"No honey, 'WE' have this too. You own the collection too. Familiarize yourself with it, get to know and enjoy it as much as I do."

In time she may enjoy it more than I do and perhaps find herself picking up CDs we will both enjoy on a regular basis. I'm game :)
