That depended on what kind of earplugs I was using, generally the little yellow ones called "Ears" gave the best soundstage.
I also noticed when arc-gouging the sound had better bass when using all copper welding lead than when using aluminum. And that Lincoln machines sound better than Millers, especially when magic dots were put on the case. Magic dots also improve the quality of the welding itself, I'd never attempt x-ray quality high pressure code work without dots on the machine and proper spikes under it. It's amazing the machines work at all given their cheesy painted sheet-metal housings, not a single heavy polished aluminum case to be seen.
