The benefits of hyperbaric oxygen were discovered accidentally. About 150 years ago diving technology developed to the point where bends were a problem and they developed decompression chambers. About 100 years ago they realized that the chambers worked better with pure oxygen (instead of air), as that would prevent the re-introduction of nitrogen into the blood. Then they noticed that wounds healed better when divers were decompressed in chambers with pure oxygen. This started about 50 years of research into what did and didn't work with HBOT.Most of this research (at least in this country) was performed by the US Navy, as they have the largest population of divers. By the late '60s they realized that there were tangible benefits from HBOT, so the FDA had to approve it. They only approved 13 specific and rather rare conditions. Here is a link to an interview with the doctor that signed off on this order. He was a career naval officer and one of the experts on HBOT. At first he refused to sign off on the document as it did not approve HBOT for stroke, sickle-cell anemia and other conditions *known* to respond to HBOT. Faced with a threat of court-martial, he signed it, but only after including 14 more conditions that were specifically prohibited for HBOT treatments. After that time he dedicated his career to showing that HBOT worked for the prohibited conditions. His thinking was that sooner or later some lawmaker would wonder why it was prohibited when myriad studies showed it to be effective.

We are still waiting for the lawmakers to wake up, but they are unfortunately under the sway of the big pharmaceuticals. The only good news in recent times was that they added diabetic foot wounds to the list of approved conditions. There are proposals to study traumatic brain injuries sustained by Iraqi war vets, but I'm not sure that this will be funded.
Regarding your son with CP, a good starting point is the MUMS (Mothers United for Moral Support) website. MUMS was founded by the mother of a CP daughter as a support group. A few years later she discovered HBOT. She lives in Canada and was unable to find anyone who would treat her daughter, so she flew her to England. (HBOT is widely used in Europe, Japan, and China. In the UK, MS patients have set up a chain of co-op clinics to keep the costs down.) The daughter experienced significant improvements and much of the MUMS website is dedicated to sharing information on HBOT and where clinics are located.

As far as strokes go, there is a lot of information on the web. Two good books that include before-and-after SPECT brain-scans are:
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy by Neubauer
The Oxygen Revolution by HarchYou can buy both of these books on Amazon for $27.30 including shipping. A good investment, and highly recommended.
I purchased a hyperbaric chamber in the hopes it would help with my spinal cord injury. So far, it has only been of limited usefulness for me. However, we donated the use of the chamber to a Certified Hyperbaric Technologist, and my rehab MD (specializing in strokes, TBI, and spinal cord injuries) has been referring patients there. To date, every single patient (besides myself) has shown significant improvement with HBOT. The patients include stroke victims, TBI patients, a 5 y.o. girl with CP, and a woman with RSI. Next week a Lyme's disease victim will begin treatments.
Lyme's has also been show to benefit, as seen in this paper. The disease-causing spirochete is anaerobic and is killed by the oxygen forced deep into the tissues that are not normally well oxygenated.

I could go on and on, but I think you get the picture. This is not some woo-woo stuff designed to scam people. It is the real deal, and the only therapy that is actually effective for many conditions, including CP. I would strongly urge you to investigate this therapy. If you wish, let me know and I will e-mail you contact information for my MD and CHT so you can speak with them yourself.
