The 96k number they are speaking of is not the sample rate, but rather the bit rate of the lossy-compressed MP3 they are streaming. The distinction is discussed here. Here's a quote from that page:
"By contrast, uncompressed audio as stored on a compact disc has a bit rate of 1,411.2 kbit/s (16 bits/sample × 44100 samples/second × 2 channels / 1000 bits/kilobit)."
96k bit rate MP3 is actually rather low quality. Many internet radio stations use a 128k bit rate.
