Of course, safety is the top priority...

and I did not mean to imply that "teaching" was the end-all solution. Electrical safety and physical hazards MUST obviously be addressed beyond simply teaching the child not to touch/chew or climb/pull on things. I did not intend to imply that our son is allowed to use any equipment without supervision; I did use the term "minimal supervision", and should have elaborated further-what I mean by "minimal supervision" is that our 3-year old is allowed to use the equipment independently as long as I (or another adult) am present to supervise ("present" meaning close enough to immediately intervene should he do anything potentially dangerous). At no time is he allowed touch any equipment without an adult present (the "practice system" I mentioned is housed in a closed armoire, which I retrofitted with a lock; all cabling and power outlets are concealed and inaccessible). My main system is in an unused bedroom, which is ALWAYS locked when I am not in there.

I guess my stance on childproofing is somewhat "middle of the road". There are certainly hazards which absolutely cannot be left to chance, however I think it is possible to excessively sanitize the home environment. There is no doubt that toddler behavior can be unpredictable and impulsive, and any hazard that can lead to serious injury/death MUST be adequately addressed. However, toddlers also have an insatiable curiosity and their intellectual development is rapidly progressing during this stage. I believe in respecting and embracing this curiosity, and consider providing them with appropriate outlets to be one of my most important parental tasks. Simply saying "no" and reinforcing this by fortifying the house, packing away everything that could be damaged, and providing punishment when infractions do occur can no doubt lead to an obedient child and preservation of one's "stuff", but I feel my approach also accomplishes this with the bonus being all the "quality" time I have with with my sons. I'm from a small family, and had never been around young children for any significant amount of time prior to having my own (and my brother and sisters in law having theirs at around the same time); for me its been one pleasant surprise after another thus far and I never cease to be amazed by how smart, creative, and inventive toddlers can be!
