AUDIOPHILE ANXIETY (DRAMATIZATION) -
---BEGIN QUOTED TEXT---
Our hobby is a cruel one, sometimes even devilish. The search for better sound is endless and, if done carelessly, can bring a lot of pain and suffering to our lives.
We decide to upgrade. We seek, read and ask. Finally we decide. Are we happy? Scarcely. The problem is we keep seeking, reading and asking, until that horrible thing happens: somewhere we find a negative comment about our just-purchased equipment.
We try to calm ourselves. Not everybody has to like everything, we repeat in our most convincing voice, but the devil keeps commanding attention. Even if we like our new equipment, each month we anxiously search our favorite audio magazine/forum looking for new comments “just in caseâ€.
The fear of technology obsolescence haunts us constantly.
Then we read someone saying: “Forget about the sound, concentrate on the musicâ€. Ha! Good joke my friend, I bet you do just that.
Look at your system. Don’t you think that your once great amp is no longer a good match for your great new speakers? Of course it’s not. Start saving. But, wait, now that you have spend all that money, are you going to let that lousy preamp ruin everything?
Yet, I admit it, this damned hobby brings joy to my life in a way few things can (maybe books and chess).
So my friends, maybe we should take a sabbatical. One full year without TAS, Stereophile and Asylums. How’s that? Will that kill the devil?
Be excellent.
