HI,
I had the same setup with dual DW-1's in an active cross over biamped configuration. While the subs did not go the lowest I thought they offered qualities that were (are) rare in the world of sub's. Namely, their response was linear (acoustic suspension tuning) down to cut off. This made them fairly easy to integrate with bass shy speakers like electrostatic panels. You sure are right about being power hungry but that's the price of acoustic suspension. The DW-1's stayed in my system until they were finally replaced in the late 1980's with the Kinnergetics SW-800 subs that performed beautifully with my Martin Logan CLS IIA's. This setup is with me today and is still a heart stopper.
