I wanted to try a tube amp, just for fun and thought I'd pick up a Pathos Classic One (not too expensive, just for fun) to add to the mix and not replace the Levinson. Maybe it's just the dealers talk, but everyone said it won't drive those speakers. The CD is the Levinson 390S - I haven't auditioned in 5yrs, but when I did, it was amongst the best of many I looked at. I really think it's great. I listen to records less frequently, but recently had a local turntable expert re-wire my Roksan Radius 5, and we changed the cartridge to a Blue Point Special Evo III. I don't have enough vinyl to change the turntable as yet so want to focus on the CD/Amp part. Given changes in formats over the years and having been drawn into SACD (and not feeling satisfied about it), I thought the amp would be the appropriate place to start (especially since I wanted to get some tubes).
More succinctly, I want to try out tubes, but don't want anything unnaturally warm or billowy on the bass.
Thanks kuma - you asked the exact right question.
