Here's a possibility...

I purchased a Cambridge 840A integrated amplifier from Audio Advisor when they were first introduced last year. Mine, too, went into protection mode at seemingly random times. I traced the problem to brief power interruptions (a flicker of less than 1 second), which are common here in central Florida during the rainy season. I could operate the amp only after resetting the main power switch on the unit's back panel, a routine that quickly became very annoying.

I made Audio Advisor and Cambridge's importer aware of the problem, which they had not known about prior. The importer informed Cambridge Audio in England, who then conducted power-outage simulations. Cambridge soon acknowledged that their CAP5 protection system was sensitive to power interruptions. The company said they planned to find and implement a software solution.

Your 640A also uses the CAP5 system. Possibly you experienced the same problem.

I have dealt with Audio Advisor for over 10 years and always found them to be friendly, trustworthy, and reliable. Once or twice my salesperson forgot to get back to me during our 840A discussions, but a follow-up call always fixed that. In the case of my Cambridge 840A amp, they refunded my money without any fuss, as usual.
