how to get quality, portable, mono sound

I'm interested in using one speaker with my laptop. I won't get into why. It needs to be portable with the highest possible quality. I'm listening mostly to stereo mp3s. I've been reading negative things about using a simple Radioshack 1/8 jack stereo to mono converter. The Wikipedia article 'stereophonic sound" says there's no real difference in quality between a stereo & mono recording, just the soundscape effect, for those into that sort of thing. The problem, according to the article, is the probability of phase cancellation if you mix stereo signals together. In the corresponding article I found that this may be remedied by using two speakers and reversing the polarity on one. I'm left to doubt that this solution would work if applied to one speaker, taking the lines from the other and soldering them to, in opposing polarity with the first speaker's own. I think that would just confuse it. Is there any other way to preven phase cancellation but with one speaker? Knowing a bit about electronics I'd be happy to build something from component parts if possible, in which case I'd need to know what's needed to get the best possible mono output out of a good lone, maybe 4" speaker that I might be able to order. Is there any weird extra little component I'd need? Thanks!
