Certainly, there was more than one reason for Timbre's disappearance. The Stereophile article and measured spec's didn't help, nor did Accuphase refusing to license their transport mechanism. The gradual erosion of the market for DAC/Transport combos also began about that time -- so the deck was stackd against them from a number of standpoints.

To this day, the only comparable DAC's I've tried were the far more expensive Wadia 27ix and an Esoteric DAC slaved to it's matching transport.

I think if John Kukulka ever decided to get back into designing digital, I'd be an ealy adopter regardless of what a review might say. Anyone that runs across a second market TT-1 at a good price, will love what it does.
