A musical group may have multiple point sources but each musician/source is playing their own part of the music. Multi-channel stereo has multiple point sources for each channel and each point source for a particular channel is playing exactly the same thing.

One point source per musician in a live group produces a good result. Several point sources per channel in multi-channel stereo confuses things. The ear can't localise a source for a particular sound because there are multiple sources for that sound. M-c stereo is definitely not a similar kettle of fish to a live group and the results are not remotely similar.

M-C stereo is also not similar to what you get at a live performance in a hall. In the hall each individual source is different and each has only 1 direct path and multiple reflections, each with a different delay time and/or frequency spectrum due to absorption from one or more different surfaces. M-c stereo has multiple instances of only 2 different sources and the placement of those sources is quite different to the placement of sources in the hall. The reflection patterns are different due to placement differences and you're getting multiple early and delayed reflections of the same source, plus multiple direct paths for that same source signal.

M-c stereo will always be different to a live performance and can't approximate it anywhere near as well as 2 channel stereo in a reasonable setup can do.
