Five identical speakers cost a lot of money, so most people have two good speakers, three mediocre speakers, and one or two decent subwoofers.
The very important center speaker rarely seems to match the left and right speakers!
A two channel system with the SAME TOTAL spending invested in two very good or excellent speakers is very likely to sound better.
Software, speakers and room acoustics account for at least 95% of total sound quality variation among sound systems, with electronics st 5% and wires 0% ... or maybe 0.1%.
That's my opinion based on 41 years of audio experience.
