Probably more to do with the practicalities than the theory.

With an ideal system in an ideal room with an ideal recording, multi-channel would be superior to two channel, no question in my opinion.

With a given budget of say £10,000 however, a £2,000 stereo source component, £4,000 (2 channel) amplification, £3,000 (x2) speakers and £1,000 worth of stands/cables etc would sound better than a multi channel system which needed 4 or 5 channels of amplification for £4,000, 4 or 5 speakers for £3,000 and wires to match.

The best demonstration of multi-channel I heard was excellent, immersive without being overwhelming, but my own two channel system is more involving because the source, amps, speakers and ICs/speaker wires are better.

I do have a HT multi-channel system but it isn't really capable of true SACD or DVD-A surround.

Best Regards,
Chris redmond.
