I've been reading that HT has no place for serious audio listening. That when it comes to serious listening two speakers is all you need.
When I think about this I cannot think of an adequate room in my house 'cept for my renters room, or other homes that have a suitable room for good 2-channel speaker placement, that would allow for good imaging, etc.
When I purchased my dream speakers I was going to sell my other floorstanders. But before doing this I had to see if having more than just two speakers made any difference, and it does, it sounds better. Mind you I've always had a preference for surround sound. Now however I use multi-channel stereo and reserve surround sound for movies. Being that the vast majority of recordings are stereo, it makes sense to stay in stereo mode. Having many speakers compensates for less than ideal speaker placement in your typical listening enviroment.
Some say I don't like sound coming from behind me. Well you don't have to place speakers behind, you can place them to the sides and front. This gives you a wide soundstage and other speakers can be placed accordingly to cover any holes or gaps to give a complete 180 degree soundstage in front of you.
