After procrastinating for over a year, I finally motorvated meself
to hook-up my beloved JMR Twins ll to my "wife's" kitchen stereo, a
vintage Pioneer SX-750 receiver with a Rotel RCD 965BX CDP. She
was happy with the small Boston HD5 speakers in there and they
were...adequate and appropriate. The Twins are somewhat overkill in there and,
well, I guess they, you know...they just, well, they just deserve
better (he snobbishly types).Anyway, the Twins been gatherin' dust as they were replaced with
Trente many moons ago but I'll never sell them, so, why not?
Needed new speaker cable too, so went to RS and bought a 25'
extension cord to use, as there is no Home Depot round hear and
I've been interested in trying an extension cord in that capacity.
So, clean the kitchen and rearrange a few things to accomodate the
larger speakers, which certainly ARE NOT ideally placed.
Yikes!...one is on the refrigerator! What kinda audiophile does
THAT (he less snobbishly types)?!?!?Cut the cord, prep the ends, run the pretty shiny bare end copper
to the Twins (JMR speakers LOVE bare copper!) then to the Pioneer
(which is temporarily turned sideways for set-up). Check
everything. Cool. Power on. Nada. Hmmmmm. Maybe that particular
extension cord don't cut it? Check everything. Again. Power on.
Nada part dos. Hear a slight bit of the source when the volume is
at 90%. Hmmmm. Doesn't bode well. But! Gotta go meet my wife and friends for dinner, then the school spring
play with my wife's class. What kinda sushi was that?... (Why? won't
the kitchen stereo work?)... Inhale... (why? won't the kitchen
stereo work?)... exhale... (why? won't the kitchen stereo work?)...
What song were those kids singing?... (Why? won't the kitchen
stereo work?)... What were you saying?... (Why? won't the kitchen
stereo work?)... Good to see you and Why? won't the kitchen stereo
work?Get home, start over. Remove the 3rd (ground) wire from the mix.
White wire +, green wire -, no black wire. Sure, that's GOT TO BE
IT! Do it. Nada part tres. Now have the receiver staring me in the
face as I sit and ponder WHAT the HELL is WRONG? Hmmmm. Then, I SAW THE LIGHT!!
Actually, the red monitor light had been on all along, just hadn't previously seen it.
Flick switch to source. No light. Music! Problem solved.Damn. Definately would have enjoyed dinner more if I'd figured that out earlier.
Not sure about the Spring Play though...
