I've found myself sitting around waiting rooms a lot the last couple of weeks and I like to 1) listen to music and 2) read. So I ventured out to the local mega bookstore and found an interesting book that I think will appeal to most around here:"This Is Your Brain on Music" by Daniel J. Levitin
Levitin is a recording engineer who begins this book by recounting his journey through high-end audio until eventually landed him permanently in a recording studio. He purchased his first stereo system during his tweens but it was not until his father demanded that he pick up a pair of Headphone!!!! that he felt that listening to music could be otherworldly. Heh, yeah for headphones!
Anyhow, the book is about music listening, the physiology behind our interpretation of music, how some people (musicians and audiophiles) have been trained to pick out aspects of sound reproduction that most people can't hear etc. He then goes to neuropsychology and then I am assuming the philosophy of the mind as he attempts to discuss why we like what we like. So far it reads very well and has kept me very interested. It can get a bit dense in a few areas but nothing overly complicated as to read like a text-book. But its not cursory as to leave the reader truly clawing for more. It is well referenced to boot, so those that do want more can easy get to the meat.
