To be fair...

I've shipped and received hundreds of items (probably 500 or more) using Fedex, UPS, USPS, and a few others from time to time.

Out of all those times, I've had shipping damage six times, one lost item, and one temporarily lost item.

To be fair, all but one of these would have been prevented by good packing - one of the lost items was due to the shipping label being separated from the package. Also to be fair, I've received scores of packages with inadequate packing that made the trip okay.

A big problem in all the person-to-person commerce (through things like ebay, audiogon, etc.) is that, in my experience, most people don't know how or don't care to pack properly, using enough of the right material for the job.

Now, as for claims processing, all of them put the claimant through an inordinately lengthy and painful process - for that I am quite willing to criticize them.
