Music on New Years Eve - Live, live, live! (Thanks to audio and radio.)

As the party I had planned on going to was canceled, I stay at home with my trusty refrigerator and listen to music.

First, NPR with an hours-long live jazz program originating from points around the country. The first set comes from Boston's Berklee Performance Center, big band gospel jazz and it's straight-through wonderful. Then at nine, after switching to Kansas City, the typical NPR mindset takes over and it becomes a series of tedious interviews, in which the presenter is as important as the performer. Feh!

So off I go to Strauss' Die Fledermaus, a live-by-tape performance from Vienna. Occasionally I go back to NPR and linger there when the music's on. Then on comes the Boston Pops live from Symphony Hall and the grand inspiration hits me, to tune the three radio-stereos I own each to one of the different stations.

And finally, the coup de grace: At ten o'clock Prairie Home Companion goes live from Nashville on TV, so that's on in the living room, and loud. As I circulate giddily around my house, brewskis in hand, I am transported to all these different venues and styles.

After ten thirty however I stick pretty much with the Nashville cats, because the music's the best. Great, GREAT playing and singing from Rhonda Vincent and the Rage, Emmylou Harris, Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver (high tenor Jaimie Dailey is possibly the greatest living singer), Robin and Linda Williams, Suzy Bogguss, Sam Bush, Cowboy Jack Clement, Jerry Douglas, Stuart Duncan, Buddy Emmons, the Old Crow Medicine Show... Omigosh! Each and every one of them is in top form, as is the phenomenal Rich Dworsky, whose tasty piano licks have been featured on PHC since the very beginning.

If ever a DVD is issued, buy it!
