As Dave as indicated, it is matter of preference and personally prefer rows towards front as I am less keen of hall sound. Your comments do present a dichotomy especially wrt recordings techniques which attempt to limit of amount of hall sound recorded for practical reasons. Only in exceptional cases will the mics be placed that far back, so folk with a preference for such mid hall presentations are bound to be disappointed when they listen to most recordings. The issue of designing and tweaking halls is another matter entirely, any concert hall has to strive to provide an best possible presentation at all seats, there will be variation due to practical limitations, but it is in the interest of the hall to keep these variations to a bare minimum or at least not excerbarate such limitiations due to poor design.
