Yes, it's a matter of personal preference

And my preference is to hear the instruments and not the hall, which means I like a listening position which provides mostly direct sound and not much reverberant sound. I also like recordings made on sound stages for the same reason.

By the way, I wasn't arguing that the hall doesn't matter. We can't all sit in the best seats, so one of the most important objectives of a good hall is preserving the instrument balance over as much of the audience as possible. And even if you sit up front, the design of the hall can affect the sound.

I'm just lucky that the majority of recordings capture a perspective that is closer to my ideal than those who prefer a more mid hall sound.
