Re: "The digital recording always sounded brighter"

"In my opinion, high frequencies are the weakest link on CDs/digital recordings, so violin is one of the few instruments that favors analog recordings/vinyl (while emphasizing the main weakness of digital recordings/CDs). "

What about trumpet, cymbals, flute, picolo or one of many other instruments that have a large HF content (more in fact than violin).

"In my opinion a focus only on bass guitar and drums would move the comparison in favor of digital ... while a focus on cymbals might move the comparsion in favor of analog (or maybe there is no good comparison between live cymbals and any recorded cymbals)."

Why focus on one kind of instrument at all? If I only listened to string quartets then I could see this kind of arguement but last time I checked an orchestra has strings, woodwinds, horns, and percussion instruments of all shapes and sizes. The simple fact is that a cello playing even relatively low notes will still have harmonics and overtones well up into higher registers. The whole frequency bandwidth has importance and can't be overlooked.

I am not so sure you are even right about bass instruments and analog vs. digital. I have heard some digital sources that were VERY lightweight in the bass. My analog rig has powerful and tuneful bass along and is overall well balanced. Now, my digital is too and they sound more alike than at anytime before in the past. However; my digital while not lean in the least still has a bit more energy in the upper frequencies than my analog. My phono cartridge is not at all rolled off in the highs so the question then is whether or not there is less RECORDED energy in the highs.

If this is the case it might be that some of the problem is with the mastering of digital recordings or the remastering of older analog recordings where the engineer decided to manipulate the frequency balance a bit.
