Re: too broad a brush

As in my post above, the professional HD cameras out today do so much to the image in camera, it would be hard to say that they are presenting 'accurate' video in the same way audiophiles judge natural sound. Also the HD encoding process has to remove at least 50% of the video information and this is compensated by adding contrast, smoothing, motion trickery, edge enhancement and color enhancement. Then you have the same ype of processing happening again inside the HD TV before you see the image.

However, I would much rather watch HD than any standard definition, as it is a huge improvement in almost every parameter. And we don't have an analog equivalent for our home (unless you have a film projector!).

That unnatural crispness you see is mostly from the TV manufacturer, and too much contrast settings in store etc. Certain technologies are worse than others (DLP). A good HD set, can have a very smooth and 'filmic' look to it when calibrated properly.
