General audio topics that don't fit into specific categories.

Go pro- powered studio monitors, pro CD player/DAC w/a volume control.

Powered studio monitors fit all of the qualifications that you list. I would look at Dynaudio Acoustics and Mackie. The Mackie HR824's are easier to find used than the Dynaudio's. If neutrality is your goal, there really isn't a better choice with seperate amps and speakers in your price range.

Wouldn't a CD player designed for broadcast be the best choice given your requirements? Something pro from Denon, Tascam, etc should meet your needs. You might need a preamp if you're using a CD player, but pro DAC's often have volume controls.

Running the whole thing balanced would also be good for what you want, and should be easy to do with your system requirements.

If you're only doing digital, then a pro audio DAC with a volume control to powered studio monitors could be a fanastic simple solution. Something like the Benchmark or Lavry DA10 for the DAC, into used Mackie HR824's, total cost is under $2000 including cables and power cords, if you use one of your current players as a transport. You would probably even be able to get such a system with a trial period from a retailer.
