Maybe. But the best part is, your CDs have been duped! And how do
*they* feel? They feel like giving you better sound!
George Louis's principal discovery was that a stand-alone
duplicator did a job superior to any computer, although everyone
who cares to investigate, already knows that CD-Rs sound better in
general. Also George developed some world-beater fluids.
The results were manifest to every open ear.
But then, a couple weeks ago when I was in San Diego, things began
to unravel. I challenged George, as did my two local associates
(The Two Bobs) who had been rendering invaluable assistance to the
cause. It had been discovered by us that *very similar*-looking
machines were available on the Net for far less money. George
retreated, then he vacillated, and we haven't spoken since. Back at
home here in Boston I've been too jammed with other work to proceed
on the disclaimer I intended to write for Positive Feedback. So I'm glad this has come up.
"I believe we were all misled to believe Mr Lewis changed software,
which is NOT the case." Actually no one ever wrote (don't know
about telephone conversations) that he changed software; he did
claim, however, to have changed the "firmware". Presently I am of
the view he hadn't, and probably can't, but I'm no computer head. He
did, however, teach himself, and us, how to "tweak out" the device
for ultimate performance, and it may well be that his choice of
drives (there are myriad) is a factor. If one thinks of George's markup as a "finder fee" or "R&D cost",
then his actions become marginally excusable. Whatever deception
he practiced is not.At the same time let's not lose sight of the fact that this one
man, operating alone, laid the groundwork for an improvement to the
Compact Disc that no number of thousands of dollars spent on a
player has yet provided, over a twenty-five-year history. So much
for our vaunted designers!I hope George will be forgiven by you, but for myself, as a writer,
I feel seriously dissed and don't care whether I ever speak to the
man again.clark
