The show was great! Here's my quick take on a few rooms. Some terrific tube and SE amps: DeHavilland, Cyrus Brenneman, Welborne. How about Welborne's battery ultrapath preamp? The NuForce amps were interesting (especially in the Audiokinesis room), but I don't think I'm ready to sell my tubes just yet. Also, the Stellavox monoblocks in the Tonian Labs room were impressive. Among the fastest and most dynamic amps I recall having listened to.
As far as speakers, Dr. Edgar's slimline signature horns were really special. Such a sense of effortlessness and ease. I thought the Cyrus Brenneman amp driving these speakers was impressive too.
The Zu crew were very acommodating to all. I had read a lot of passionate reviews about these speakers. They were high on my list of speakers to audition and consider. Not my cup of tea, though.
Audiokinesis' new Cheetah was an impressive fostex based bipole. Very ambient rich with excellent clarity in vocals. They got "tone" right with this speaker. At 94db, this is definitely a speaker to check out under ~$2k. The designer Duke and his wife were very pleasant and gracious.
Not having previously heard Cain & Cain, the I-Bens were coherent, rendered great tone with a large soundstage. I can appreciate the loyal following.
However, for my taste, the Tonian Labs DL-T1 speaker (wideband driver supplemented with a ribbon supertweeter) were really enjoyable. Definitely a speaker I would like to own. Incredible ability to reproduce instruments and music faithfully. Few speakers really get piano "right" and, with these speakers, one hears the attack, tone and weight of the piano notes in spades. The designer has studio recording experience and produced a percussion and flute session with a high quality mic (think Chesky+) which was played back on the DL-T1's. Wow, the drums were "in" the room! Good thing the Holidays are right around the corner...maybe a good excuse.
Great show, especially for the everyday enthusiast seeking quality, reasonably priced gear. I hope this is an annual event!
