Both these devices work by altering the RFI in the environment. The amount of RFI can vary between the sensitivity of your gear and their RFI emission, as well as the general environment (proximity to radio/TV stations, etc.) The effect will be more noticeable in environments where there is more RFI present, although the pebbles also work in the presence of large amounts of EMI, hence the audible effect of placing them close to your powerful speaker magnets, especially the woofer.
