I want to compile a report on how experienced 'philes have seriously *down*scaled their audio investments while feeling that, overall, they've lost little if anything that was vital to their enjoyment.Whether involuntary (divorce; job loss; moved into far smaller space) or voluntary (expensive rig wasn't fun anymore; wanted to free up funds for other hobby; etc.), I'm specifically interested in stories where people owned some of the more expensive esoteric stuff and then scaled back.
We all know how expensive some of this stuff can get and how the allure/promise of more expensive/better has caused more than one good man and woman to go astray or simply deep into hock.
I think it would be of benefit to report on how the right stuff in the right combination, at far reduced financial pain, can be just as enjoyable. Needless to say, such findings only count if you have really left some of the dear stuff behind.
I don't want to burn up bandwidth on this forum so if you're interested to participate to benefit a few audiophiles "out there" who read my site, e-mail me at srajan@6moons.com and get into the following points:
What have you owned before that you considered to be "the shit" - dialed, tweaked, maxed-out to whatever extent you could afford/wanted to pursue at the time?
What's your minimized/downscaled equivalent now (or has been in-between before you went ape again)?
What kind of retail price discrepancy are we talking?
If you can guesstimate in a percentage figure by calling what you had before 100% (the best you ever had), how much did carry over to the cheaper rig? Or do you find the cheaper rig superior, in which case *it* gets 100% and your former rig the lower figure.
And specifically, which qualities improved, which attributes got lost along the way?
Also, include if what you listen for/consider important has changed so that even though the cheaper system may not do certain audiophile things as well (or not at all) as the "bona fide" rig, you actually don't care(or prefer that it doesn't do that other stuff).
Again, the intent is to demonstrate, by example and from the field, how with experience and having played in the pro leagues, one can successfully downscale without suffering or regret.
For that reason (and if you're inclined to participate), I need what you owned, what replaced it, how much money was saved and what, exactly, changed in audiophile terms.
Thanks in advance for any contributions. Your submissions will be published verbatim (minus possible editing for language and puncuation) and credited by first name and last initial. No deadline, I'll simply collect stuff and once I have enough, we'll let 'er rip.
Cheers.
