Dave.. I use the Sony CDU948S SCSI CDR in my home PC. I use an adaptec FW SCSI controller. I have the TEAC 32 speed SCSI CD which I use to copy from. I am currently using "HOTBURN" software to do the copies. I can make mixed CD's with no problem.. It writes at 4 speed.
I've been able to play these copies on all my players car and home. I've seen some IDE CDR setups that don't work well and have pops in various places..
