that spending more on speakers will get you better speakers. There are a lot of really expensive speakers that are a waste of money. I don't disagree with anything else you say, assuming comparisons are made between competent designs. There are a few manufacturers who tune their cd players to output an idiosyncratic frequency response, and there are amplifiers that are unstable and/or whose frequency responses vary significantly into real speaker loads.
