I typed my above response before I read your response. I think our experiences roughly match. I find that when I move from crap components and wires to good quality components and wires that I can indeed hear an obvious difference. Beyond that (among good quality componentry) I can't hear an obvious difference and only hear subtle nuance differences which I may indeed be imagining. Therefore I've always purchest the cheapest equipment from my demo group and have assumed that if I dropped a big chunk of change to go up market in quality that I would hear a difference. But I have no direct experience there.
