Sony SRF-59/ Koss Porta Pro2 review

205.188.116.7

I bought the Sony SRF-59 and the Koss Porta Pro2 today after researching these items obessively on the net. The Sony was $12.99, the Koss was $29.00.
I had never heard of the Porta Pro2 before, however the best price on the Porta Pro I could find was $34, so if these phones bore the Porta Pro name, I felt they were extremely similar, if not the same, and at the best price. Research on this forum unveiled that they have the same drivers, but are lacking a fitting gimmick of the original Porta Pros that no one seemed to like anyway.

Research told me that the SRF-59 had incredible power, sensitivity, selectivity. No one prepared me for their quiet beauty; all the photos made them look cheap.

I am listening to the 59 now at the computer through the Porta Pro2. First some comments about the 59.

Their clean, thundering power is unbelievable. They have great selectivity. My test consists of tuning in two adjacent, weak stations: 97.7 oldies, and 97.9 rock. I live in Northern Va. This radio can select between them. Another test: can the 59 select between two adjacent, powerful stations, 107.7 news and 107.9 religious? Yes it does so effortlessly. My favorite station is 97.7 beautiful oldies, a very weak station in another state, Md. I am hearing it in powerful stereo now. One caveat: I had to work to adjust the headphone antenna to get the station the way I wanted it. Right now, the headphone cord is hanging from a lamp switch above my head to get my favorite all time station, 97.7. Of course, more powerful stations come through in crystal clear, thunderous power.

AM is extremely important to me. I think I love radios so much because they are able to provide me with information during an emergency that will help me survive. The AM is at least as good as my C Crane radio, and I've found my CC radio very good.

For $12.99, the Sony SRF-59 is the greatest bargain on earth. Most who think they know would turn their nose up at this humble looking radio with the ignoble analogue tuning. They just don't know. The power of the 59 is amazing.

The Porta Pro2 are named, I think, because they are the successors to the originals. Gone is a fitting gimmick at the temple that really didn't do much, I think. They have a deep bass, rich midrange, and the treble is rolled off slightly. If there is a fault with these phones, it is that some might think they have too much bass. However, let me say this: I have been listening to them for a while at high volume and they are non-fatiguing. That is the highest compliment I can pay.

For a total of $43, I just bought a high end stereo system.
