i've done this comparison many times. most (90%) of those doing these comparisons with me have agreed that the 'best' vinyl is quite a bit better than the 'best' sacd sonic performances. 10% prefer vinyl but feel sacd is fairly close (these are sacd multi-channel zealots).personally, my opinion is that sacd (at it's best) is good enough to be completely satisfying to my ears at it's current SOTA. it will cost you plenty to get vinyl that will easily surpass the best sacd performance.
issues;
---when an lp is cut from a dsd master there is little difference in the performance. when it is analog mastered the vinyl wins every time.
---will dsd performance improve at the consumer level? i heard Ray Kimber's demo at HE2003 in S.F. it was wonderfully immediate and dynamic.....but not necessarily as good as the best vinyl i have heard.....and off a hard drive. it would be interesting to compare it to the vinyl.
---how about multi-channel sacd compared to the best vinyl? i haven't done this comparison directly. my opinion is that it WILL make things closer.
the most telling events have been friends with music backgrounds but not audiophiles that have visited my room. they are overwhelmed at the clear advantage that vinyl has over any digital at recreating their perception of the original event. their reference is live music.
audiophiles tend to pick out aspects where digital might do this or that as good. their reference, many times, is a digital recording.....it IS what they tend to mostly listen to.
