Re: Right on, nice post

"As you so rightly point out, the observational IS a part of science, - and the scientific method...."

Yes, it certainly is. But observation of perceived differences, absent proper controls, will only tell you what has been perceived. It won't tell you what is actually responsible for that perception. Any claim to the contrary is not the "scientific method", it is SNAKE OIL founded purely on sophistry.

In this case, perceived or "observed" differences could be due to actual sonic differences or they could be due solely to the influence of attitudes, beliefs and expectations (there is overwhelming evidence, derived through the careful application of the "scientific method" that tells us human perceptions can be significantly affected by such factors). Without proper controls, one simply can not say what is causing the perceptions or observations.

That is so fundamental that I can't believe people still try to ignore it.

I have nothing wrong with uncontrolled obervations ("sighted listening") for making personal choices. That's how I have choosen my equipment and upgrades over the past 30-plus years, because for purposes of my personal choices all I care about is my "perceptions" and my resulting enjoyment or lack thereof.

It's when it moves from personal choices or decisions to claims of scientific validity that I have problems. Much of the world remains mired in poverty, ignorance and violence because of superstition. Attempts to promote falacies under the banner of "the scientific method" doesn't, to my way of thinking, help the situation.
