Re: Ringo

The distinction, made in the first item on the list, is that the guy is talking about rock drummers. I agree that it's ludicrous to give Ringo credit for stuff clearly done by others first, but he absorbs so much undue criticism from people who don't know what the hell they're talking about...I found this some months back & posted it on Rocky Road. In a thread that should've been titled 'Least-Informed Opinions on Drummers.' Of course, those who saw fit to bash Ringo had little to say in response. I suspect it didn't sway their opinion one bit. Why would it, when they know that he wasn't any good & was the luckiest no-talent of all time? As for this thread, I am rarely interested in what the greatest moments in rock drumming are. Has almost nothing to do with good songs most of the time, and I listen to music for songs, not drumming. To me, the greatest moments in rock drumming have little to do with anything a technical wiz & master like Neil Peart has ever done; it has a lot more to do with someone like Dennis Wilson somehow managing to be the drummer in an act as popular as the Beach Boys, when he could barely play; a drummer as technically challenged as Meg White somehow managing to provide an adequate beat for the White Stripes; a non-drummer like Tommy Ramone finding a way to hit continuous 16th notes on the hi-hat. I'm far more interested in what the people with lesser talents did to stretch their abilities in service to the song than what Peart or the guy from Santana did in service to himself. Which is not to say that I don't admire talent, just that I think it's sometimes overstated when it comes to instrumental ability, at the expense of the songs all these great instrumentalists are wanking all over. This is not to denigrate the likes of Bonham (though Moby Dick is surely one of rock's lowest moments) or Moon (the best overplayer of 'em all, the best rock drummer I've ever heard), just to say that the drummer is part of the rhythm section. When he does great things, that's nice, but what I care more about is the tune; if I don't like the tune, the best drummer in the world won't save it.
