Matt Haimovitz has been touring the clubs and blowing away the hip hop/rap/pierced set with his cello. Check out some of the reviews and try to catch him in one of these clubs. It is like McLaughlin and Coryell bringing jazz to tiny rock clubs and bars 25 years ago.I like early rap that was political or intellectual. IMO a lot of later stuff is lacking on the instrumental side. It is more pogo beat than dance music. I like word jazz.
