Speakers impressed me most at CES

Never before did I hear so many speakers that sounded so exceptional and so different from each other. This reaffirmed my belief that there are too many parameters in speaker design for one manufacturer to master them all.

The most surprising speakers were the old Quad 57s from Quad Classics with two pairs in a rack. From the first note I wondered why I had sold my old stacked Quads. Truly remarkable purity and realism! With two pair in a smallish room, they can play fairly loud. All cds sounded amazing as did some Lps. I went back 3 times! Limited dynamics.

The Seimens 43 year old horns which so impressed many, I thought were okay.

The Audio Note E/SECs sounded truly musical on the old Lps that Peter played as well as on the 1927 78s recorded on cds that showed remarkable fidelity through the recording noise. Very musical and emotionally involving!

The Ascendo speakers played with all Zanden electronics in their suite had unequaled integration between bass and middle frequencies. This sound was very satisfying and pure. Horns may give better dynamics, but never before have I heard such integration between the bass and middle frequencies.

The little Audiopax speakers with their electronics were truly musically satisfying. Their amps were a substantial part of this, but the speakers must have been exceptional also as their better monoblocks running the Avantgarde Trios were no where near as satisfying.

Finally the little Cain and Cain speakers were very good as were the Harbeths.

If only someone could make an accurate, pure, dynamic, well integrated and emotionally involving speaker!
