General audio topics that don't fit into specific categories.

Married & 6.5

OK, I've spent heaps on setting up the system and only relatively minor changes are presently being made so the emphasis is again back on software. However not a large proportion of income (diminishing in the present situation) goes on software as we already have heaps, some of which has not been played for years.

Fortunately my wife shares in my love of music although not to the same extent. She appreciates fine audio and video quality but is rather sceptical about my "improvements". No, she raises no excitement if a new toy is on the way but, apart from a few sarcastic side comments, is pretty tolerant mainly because it is not money she has spent blood sweat & tears earning. If the budget situation was tighter and she was making substantial contribution then it could be a different story. As it is she has all she wants and I count myself lucky she is careful with the dollars and does not lust after expensive clothes, jewellry etc.

But there was a time we had a showdown. 20 + years ago I had traded in a heap of stuff on a pair of expensive Stax electrostatic speakers and she continually gave me a bad time about it. In the end I blew a fuse and demanded to know how the purchase had adversely affected her, how it stopped her from buying what she wanted, and what was it she wanted anyhow. As she was unable to give a cohesive reply the feuding and needling stopped.

It is sad if the love of music by one partner causes disharmony from the other. But if that love of music and componenty becomes obsessive I can see how it could be the catalyst to lead to separation. If this happens then there are obviously other factors at play and it is unlikely that this audio insanity we all share is the basic cause.
