OT: Windows XP Service Pack 1 update

For those of you that are unaware, there is a new 1.9 Meg update for Windows XP available. This is supposed to offer security updates, more patches and fixes for prior problems, updates to run more modern software / programs, etc... I went about installing it this morning and ran into major problems. This is a very "serious" installment as it actually has to document all of your settings, saves files, etc... This takes FAR, FAR longer than any of the other updates that have ever been offered. If you think i have a "slow computer", it is a 1.2 gig with 256 meg of ram. Not the fastest, but not a slouch either.

I should have figured that there would be problems when MicroShaft tells you up front that you can delete this "Service Pack" and return to your original settings. First of all, it completely deleted my cable modem and i could not get it to recognize it no matter what i did. The second thing that i noticed is that everything was noticeably slower in operation. Windows were now lagging to pop up very noticeably, etc...

In order to go back to your original settings, you have to delete the Updated service pack. From there, the puter deletes file by file what you just installed and then has to go about reconfiguring the puter as to how you originally had things set up. As mentioned, this is not exactly a two second procedure as it is basically reversing everything bit by bit.

Needless to say, i am PISSED about all of this and i will be firing off an email to Microshaft. I have to wonder if they even check ANYTHING before they release it to the public ???? As such, i would NOT download this program right away. I have a feeling that there will be patches to fix the patches. While i am FAR from being computer literate, i know enough to know that this is NOT what i want in my computer and it was not working correctly after i installed it. If you want to experiment on your own, go for it. I would like to hear from others that have installed the new Service Pack 1 ( they also have Service Pack 2 available but it is different ) to compare notes with.

Hope this helps and saves someone else the multiple hours of headaches that i've had today. Sean
