My "main system" uses an Anthem INT-2 integrated amp, which has a tube preamp section and solid state power section. I find this to be an ideal combination, offering "the best of both worlds." I've never owned a separate amp and preamp, partly because of the cost factor and partly because I just don't want the hassle of selecting the two separately and then worrying about the cables to connect them. But on the basis of my experience with the INT-2, I would heartily recommend the "hybrid" approach.
