My findings are consistent w/ yours. Speaking of the rear panel, I replaced the RCAs w/ Cardas GRFA and binding posts w/ Cardas CCGR to a good result. I also replaced the IEC inlet w/ Swiss-made Schurter. I live in SF as well, I would be more than happy to lend a hand if you'd like to have it modded.
