Obsession and addiction can occur with any pursuit. Setting up a Holy Grail and then relentlessly pursuing it can be very destructive, but that is not the fault of audio or any other hobby. These are problems that can rise to a harmful level, and fall into the area of mental health issues. These can go way beyond our asylum jokes and banter. On the other hand, Rodney has expressed some ideas that I think describe the most positive aspect of our hobby - having fun, playing. In it's healthiest form, audio can be a substitute for some of the things that make childhood such a pleasure for many. Unfortunately, many have not had happy childhood or adolescent years, and carry those burdens into adulthood.
I think we've got a lot of overgrown kids here.
Not all at the asylum, however, fall into that category. Many (like Nigel, for instance) have evolved into higher life forms for whom child-like play is a long lost pastime.
