OH NO! More worms!

Hi Dave,

I'm trying to put together some posts for another thread above that will probably end up addressing most of the issues you raise here. Basically, I agree with all you have said, but there do appear to be a few apples in with the oranges. It's pretty tough to talk about "non-standard" recording methods (which as you point out is the rule) and accuracy at the same time. But it's pretty obvious that we need to keep this in mind as we set up our systems, huh? To save you from having to wade through the other thread unnecessarily I'll try to give you a quick take on my view of the source material problem. The approach is not for everyone, and is not intended to be.

I want my system to be as transparent as possible. I want to be able to hear through it all the way back to the recording system, without my system adding or taking anything in the process. Obviously this is not possible, and I'm not even sure that it's fully definable, but it's a goal. Now it is IMPORTANT to realize that I did not say that I would want to listen to my system this way. Just that I wanted it to be able to do this. With most recordings I'll cut in the equalizer and tweak the sound a bit. It's already been tweeked by uncounted others, so I add my own tweak-to-taste without guilt. I tweak it in other ways too, because I don't always use the same electronics. Some recordings don't get tweaked at all though, and they tend to be my favorites. But there's nothing wrong with changing the color of a recording. I just like to start with as much accuracy as I can get, and go from there.

Thank you Dave, for your positive feedback on the thread. It looks like the Doppler questions may be partially resolved and it appears to have been a common case of confusion that needed to be burst open. A new advance in crossover design may be at hand. Time (and analysis) will tell.

Be excellent,

Charles
