Opening another can of worms...

Hello again, Charles --

I just wanted to clarify my comment, "...the best that can be hoped for in a home audio system." Although I didn't discuss it in my previous post, the reason that I hold this belief is that the recordings we play on our systems sound so different from one another.

As we all know, CD's are recorded in different acoustic spaces using many different microphone setups. Then, the master tapes are mixed according to the tastes of different recording engineers using a wide variety of monitor speakers in different studios. If CD's were recorded and produced under standardized conditions, it would be much easier for us to approach the goal of accurately reproducing the original musical event in our homes. However, since this is definitely not the case, we have to compromise -- focusing on minimizing the acoustic artifacts that are generated by the speakers in our listening rooms in the hope that the spatial/phase information contained in our recordings is reproduced as faithfully as possible.

Perhaps the closest we can come to achieving the elusive goal of recreating the original musical event in the home is to buy binaural recordings made using a standardized dummy head and listen to them on reference-quality headphones -- not a very satisfactory solution.

Thanks again for starting this interesting thread.

Good listening,

Dave
