Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

Re: Tried a Toshiba 3950 tonight WOW!

John,

I know what you mean. I bought one last week from Best Buy for $70, and the sound quality for that price really floored me! And like you said, it does indeed make for a good transport, as I am using it currently with my Ack!dAck and it is doing a fine job so far.

Concerning your comment about pressing the stop button and then having the music resume where you stopped when you press play, you can have it stop and not resume if you press the stop button twice. This is common among DVD players it seems.

I do plan to tweak to unit, starting with improving (or maybe replacing) the power supply. The stock dual-opamp IC probably should be replaced with something like a BB OPA 2604. All the electrolytics on the main PCB probably should be replaced with higher quality, lower ESR caps. And I think this player will benefit from chassis dampening, as it rings like a bell when you tap on the top. Hey, for $70 you have to expect some compromises, right :)

The funny thing is that for $70, this player may improve someones systems a lot more than upgrading to more expensive >$100 ICs and speaker cables. I was happy to learn about it from posts by Rosconey and others. Oh yeah, DVD video is pretty damn good to my Sony Wega 27" TV. And like you said, this is all stock with not much break in time at all.

Enjoy,

Vinnie
