Having recently heard both models, I concluded the C542 is a major upgrade over the C541i. Bass is deeper, tighter, with much more impact; the imaging is better focused; the highs are much sweeter and cleaner (the "digital burrs" on the first violins -noticed with the C541i- in the Haitink/RCO Philips Brahms 3rd are gone with the C542. The strings now sing sweetly.); and dynamic contrasts are more marked with the latter player. Resolution is superior too: I hear more low-level detail on every cut of Mickey Hart's Planet Drum CD. Most importatnly, I find the listener fatigue factor very low with the C542.
